1999 Poems

I liked writing poems in high school but I didn't write again until my final year in college.  I wrote poems again 3 years after college.  I guess all the emotions and ideas just naturally forced its way out, especially since that was an emotionally charged year.  The following short poems are some output of that year, 1999.  Most were untitled so I only retained their numbers in my poetic journal.  The years that followed were relatively silent again, perhaps due to the speeding up of life.  I might write again when I get the opportunity.  It's already 10 years after productive 1999.

 47.  Death of Friendships

Fruits, however beautiful when ripe,
Give in to nature's disposition;
They rot and they become
Food for worms,
And sore to one's nose.
But when properly disposed,
They fatten the soil,
Which, for pity and necessity,
Acquires them,
And yields better fruits.

A cup of dark brewed coffee
And two choco donuts
Sprinkled with nuts
-- Companions of the moment --
Partakers in a union that
I've enrolled with myself;
Then,
Another fill is ordered for
My partner:
Me and my cup.

A monologue in course,
A dialogue of sorts
Between my friend and me --
My lips and my ears.

Diplomas can be bought
As fast as honor sells
And people who once sought
Lay cramped in white-washed quarters.

60

Give me room to breathe my last,
Show me where the bruised reed's washed;
Do it quick, do it fast,
Give me room to breathe my last.

Open please and let me in
I cannot bear the scene
Of scholars writing
And governors travelling
As flies are buzzing,
Lightly touching
Sores in skins and scores of garbage bins
                    That look and smell the same.

Blindness is the lot of some --
Among them count beggars and
A well-read poet;
But I have learned and I dare say
That blindness is the choice of most --
Among these are
Creatures not
Aware of their
Infirmity;
Yet sadly most among these most
At some point 'tween past and now
Saw a vision of their condition
But simply shrugged and they chose
To let it stand and asked
                    To let them be.

Men of fame --
Good or bad,
Now are dead:
And I'm about.

66
Laughter echos and ricochets;
Plight is bolted, choked and chained;
Mothers hear the tears of babes,
While all the rest
Conspire to
Let loose those tears.

I'd ob-

And,
Take flight.

A Great Physician is,
Doubtless, able
To take a heart and bring it down,
Make it pass a mountain highway
And a stretch of lowland fields,
As He acts,
And manages
                    To make a patient live.

A lessee,
From a lessor,
Learns:
That a lessor,
From a lessee,
Earns.

Se-

Ill-
Situated;

Both
Drawing near to God,
Makes us
Sep'rate --
Not apart.

Comes the time appropriate
For measures such as these:
To hurt;
But when we hear the Word
And heed,
The hurting
Will not hurt.

Patches of blue,
Smudges of gray & white --
The sky,
Before a fight.

The coast, seen this

Far,
Is lost.

77

A whisper glides
And intertwines
With the winds that blow
From up this mount,
Travelling through
Ridges, slopes and plateaus
Until
It settles in the plains;
Leaving along the way
My sighs and desire
                    To be with you.
-- October 8, 1999

78

All my hopes and all my dreams
Dimmed, flickered, and was snuffed
Until
I held your hands.
-- October 8, 1999

79
Four short months
Stretched by
Tears, smiles and pray'rs
Are
Over;
But the rest of life
Still awaits
And prostrates --
Surrend'ring to
The God who makes
All things
Act
Under
His love and plans.

Pointless nouns
And aimless verbs
Are hints
Of adverse
Ends.
