5 Days Without Electricity Part 1

We're still on rotational brownouts two days after the 5-day total power outage here in Manito and in Legazpi City.  Still, there are three things we've been doing to cope.

Number 1:  Beat the Heat.  Not Miami.  That's San Antonio's problem this 2014 finals.
No power means no electric fans at night so we decided to sleep under the stars on the roof deck.  Not only did we have colder and more comfortable sleep but we also enjoyed the night sky.  We see 8 shooting stars on average within a one to two-hour span.  Perfectly clear and rain-free nights are rare in this part of the country.  These past few nights were blessedly rain-less.

Good night!

Good morning! :-)

I wish I can show you how beautiful the perfectly dark night sky is with the constellation Scorpius and the Milky Way's clouds reigning at this time of the year.  Since I don't have a DSLR camera to capture the night sky let me just  post an image of Scorpius from another website.

Scorpius and the Milky Way cross-section clouds.  You will not see the reddish-brown clouds with the naked eye but you will see the dark and white ones.  Photo from startistics.com.

I love the night sky.  It is one of God's great and personal gifts.  The stars themselves are already too marvelous to behold and an average of 8 shooting stars gives so much more joy, especially when my wife and I shout at the same time when we see the same shooting star.  The other night, mother joined in and we had one "there I saw that too!" trio.

God knows the night sky is one of the things that encourages me a lot.  I remember one of my favorite passages:

When I consider your heavens,
    the work of your fingers,
the moon and the stars,
which you have set in place,
what is mankind that you are mindful of them,
human beings that you care for them?

You have made them a little lower than the angels
and crowned them with glory and honor
                                                 -- Psalm 8:3-5 (NIV, Biblegateway.com)

I am so puny and irrelevant compared to these beautiful and magnificent creations.  I have not done anything that can remotely make God proud the way these creations do.  Why would a God who has the power to create billions of men and women and billions and billions of stars even consider looking at me?  I have always fallen asleep without an answer to this question.  I can only smile and be thankful.

Thank You, God, for the beautiful and cold nights.  No electric fan and yet no problem sleeping.
